The Northeast
South Carolina Conference was among the nine Annual Conferences created at the
Nineteenth General Conference at Philadelphia, PA. On May 2, in session until
May 24, 1892. Included in the northeast conference were Marion, Darlington,
Sumter, Orangeburg, Florence and Clarendon Counties. The Northeast South
Carolina Conference met at St. John AMEC in Marion, South Carolina on December
7, 1892. The Conference was organized under the Leadership of Bishop M. B.
Salter, assisted by Bishop Wesley J. Gaines. The Rev. A. J. Hunter was elected
first secretary of the newly organized conference.
Our present Bishop, The Right Reverend Henry Allen Belin, jr., Was elected the
104th Bishop the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Bishop Belin Brings to
South Carolina a wealth of experiences, skills and Godly wisdom that enables him
to lead forth the Seventh Episcopal District as Presiding Prelate, a position he
will hold for only four years. In 2004, Bishop Belin will retire from a
successful, Productive church career that will have spanned fifty-two years.
South Carolina's newest Bishop is a third generation preacher whose paternal
roots are in South Carolina, the state in which Bishop Belin's father, the late
Reverend Henry Allen Belin, Sr. grew up.
Born in Oakdale, Louisiana, and educated in the public schools ob Baton Rouge,
LA, Campbell College, Edward W. Lampton School of Religion and Leland College,
Bishop Belin has served the Church as Pastor, Church Publisher, and Bishop.
Elected a Bishop in 1984, Bishop Belin has served as presiding Prelate for
Districts of South Africa, Arkansas/Oklahoma, Ohio/Pennsylvania and West
Virginia.
Bishop Belin's interest in the welfare of people spans his entire church career.
He especially pioneers health initiatives and education concerns.
